Chapter Seventeen
Vickie sat up in her bed that Saturday morning and noticed the sunshine peeking through the blinds covering her window.
Please be nice out. Come on, sunshine.
She peered around the blinds and saw nothing but blue sky. Perfect.
It took only a moment to slip on a pair of black jogging pants and a baggy gray hoodie with CLEAR LAKE HIGH embroidered across the front. Quietly, she turned the doorknob and stepped into the hall.
When the door closed behind her with a faint click, she listened intently toward the back bedrooms to be sure there was no activity from either of them. Both are still sleeping. Good. They’d better be at six a.m. on a Saturday.
The vampire tiptoed into the kitchen, found a post-it note, and scrawled, Out for breakfast, back soon – V, on it. Then, she walked to the side door, pulled her shoes on, and unlocked it.
She paused for a second to admire the new replacement door. The old wooden one that had been a part of the house for twenty-five years had been removed after she’d splintered it. In its place was a modern, solid door made from steel-reinforced composite materials.
The old wood door had creaked loudly when you opened it, but the replacement was whisper-quiet, which allowed her to sneak out unnoticed.
The rush of freedom followed on the tail of the first big gust of wind. It was a chilly morning, but the sunshine made it tolerable for her. She shoved her hands into the front pockets of her hoodie to keep warm and turned left at the end of the driveway.
While Vickie had operated in the world of high school on her own, she needed to know that she could be a member of society in general by herself. That was why she now ventured down the street to eat breakfast all alone in public.
It also gave her time to reflect.
Alexis has been great, but I can’t have her holding my hand all the time. I have to learn how to do these things myself. I want to be able to go out on dates with Eric and not have Alexis there. And especially not Will. Ugh, don’t think about Will right now, Vickie. You can’t risk your teeth poking out here.
She still didn’t know her directions particularly well, but she remembered where the pharmacy store was where they witnessed the robbery. Next door to that was a fast-food restaurant that served breakfast.
Just walk there, have a breakfast sandwich of some kind and a cup of juice, and come home. It couldn’t be easier. You can do this.
Vickie had spent so much time focused on which direction she had to go in and how to not get lost that she hadn’t really paid attention to the neighborhood she was in.
As she walked along the street, the blight of the neighborhood struck her. Fast food wrappers lined the streets alongside old, cracked liquor bottles. In one yard, a rusted charcoal grill rested on its side. Everywhere she looked, she saw garbage.
